Extreme Prayer Introduction Shaken but Not Stirred EXTREME PRAYER BEGINS WITH NEED We decided to grasp at one last chance, life saving branch before sliding completely over the emotional cliff p xivo Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words Romans 8 26, ESV To survive the challenge of the mundane, chose prayer over despair p xvo And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me Mark 10 47, ESV All good prayer begins with a position of weakness p xvii When we call out to Him with the impoverished spirit of a blind beggar, a sinful tax collector, or a prodigal child, God sweeps in to lift us up p xviiiCh 1 BLANK CHECKS Extreme Prayer Accesses The Whatever You Ask Promises God is real, and He wants me to rely on Him first, not as a last resort p5 I learned not to pray about the strategies, but make prayer the strategy p5 I turned to the Bible and came across the whatever passages in the gospels p6o Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours Mark 11 24, ESV I have come to see prayer as the work p7 We get antsy after praying for a while We feel like we need to make things happen p7 Extreme prayer taps into Jesus open ended promises about prayer in a way that achieves maximum Kingdom impact p9Adoration worshipping God for who He isConfession admitting and repenting of our sinThanksgiving lifting up our gratitude for what He has doneIntercession Supplication praying for ourselves and othersVanquishing Satan practicing regular spiritual warfareo Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm Ephesians 6 11 13, ESV o Submit yourselves therefore to God Resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4 7, ESV Extreme Prayer maximizing all the prayer promises of Jesus p10Ch 2 NAME POWER God Answers Prayer in Jesus Name Jesus is at work in this man s life p17 Praying in Jesus name means presenting requests that resonate with Jesus character and advance His plans for the earth p20,21o Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it John 14 13 14, ESV o If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you John 15 7, ESV o You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you John 15 16, ESV o In that day you will ask nothing of me Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you Until now you have asked nothing in my name Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full John 16 23 24, ESV Since only the Word of God and people last forever, we should pray that God would use our lives to connect His word to the souls of people p22 Praying in Jesus name, John tells us, means praying the will of God for the world around us p23 Instead of praying deliberately for the accomplishment of things we spend most of our time praying for things we would like to see happen in our lives for healing, a car, or a job P23 Jesus did not promise to answer any kind of prayer you want Jesus promised to answer certain kinds of prayers, including the ones that match His plans for the world p24 Praying for the mission of God brings power beyond measure p25 Begin by asking Him for marching orders every morning p28Ch 3 BLIND TRUST God Answers Prayers of Faith and Faithfulness The degree of faith we have is shown by the degree to which we are faithful p32 we must live out true faith in God, submitting to His lordship and His will for this earth p34 Faith becomes faithfulness when people obey God because of their faith in Him p35o Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us 1 John 3 21 23, ESV The Bible teaches that God works powerfully through weak earthen vessels to perfectly manifest His own power p38 We simply pray in faith, living the most faith filled lives we know how Then we watch and wait for God s provision p40Ch 4 SHAMELESS God Answers Persistent Prayer Shamesless persistence pays off p45o And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart Luke 18 1, ESV o Ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and the door will be opened to you Lk 11 9 But I have learned that the prayers God chooses to answer are most often the persistent ones p48 Tenacious prayer builds faith and minimizes pride p49 Persevering in prayer has been the greatest way I have found to build faith in my diseased heart p52Ch 5 THE SYMPHONY God Answers United Group Prayer As resources go, I have found that prayer outperformed anything I ve ever seen p58 In fact, I believed all over again that God answers unified group prayer p60 When Jesus hears unified group prayer, His heart soars like a music lover taking in a rapturous melody p61o If two of you harmonize in prayer to ask about any task, my Father in heaven will make it happen for you Mt 18 19 20 Bitter grudges erect a major barrier to unified prayer p62o And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses Mark 11 25, ESV Ch 6 FROM BOBSELD TO ROCKET God Answers Specific Prayers That Build Faith God s power works quietly among groups of faithful believers in ways we can t really see p69 Praying general petitions feels safe, but it makes for terribly dull prayer meetings p 71 When praying specific prayers geared to expand God s Kingdom, I have observed that it helps to frame the specific requests in terms of God empowering believers to achieve His mission, rather than praying for God to change the hearts of unbelievers p73o therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest Matthew 9 38, ESV In praying specific prayers, we should focus on prayers asking God to empower His followers to accomplish Christ s mission p75o I am praying for them I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours John 17 9, ESV God wants to build our faith, but we make that difficult if we don t give Him a chance to dazzle us with His omnipotence p76 God really does answer whatever we ask when we pray the kinds of prayers that Jesus promised He would answer p78o Now to him who is able to do far abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever Amen Ephesians 3 20 21, ESV Ch 7 FORSAKEN God Answers Faith Filled Complaints Complaining to God is allowed with one major condition we must continue to faithfully obey and follow him in spite of our suffering p85 Complaints and faith are not always mutually exclusive p86o They cried out with a loud voice, O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete Revelation 6 10 11, ESV Great faith is required to patiently watch and prayerfully wait upon the Lord p87 You think you can t take it any, but I have only begun to create in you the full measure of your strength of character You have only just begun to fully reflect my glory I m making you into an unassailable fortress that can withstand anything this world throws at you p88 God answers faith filled complaints with grace, with character development, with the power to persevere, and with a long term plan that makes all things turn out right in the end p89Ch 8 MARCHING ORDERS Extreme Prayer Maximizes Jesus Prayer Promises the most exciting aspect of basing ministry on prayer is watching people I work alongside grow in faith p93 Practicing the principles of extreme prayer leads to belief, not boasting p96 Some of the strategies I have learned through my own adventures in extreme prayer o Begin by asking God to show you what He wants you to doo Listen for God s assignmento Keep strategic prayer listso Get together regularly with others in your community of faith for unified, persistent group prayero Pray expectantlyConclusion NO LOITERING Prayer Shaking the World over the last twenty years I ve convicted by my natural tendency to focus on my own story instead of the story God wants to write in my life o No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you John 15 15, ESV My prayers were really a request that God make my story into what I dreamed it should be p108 A beautiful romance is unfolding daily as God courts each person, patiently working His plan in history He really does get His Bride in the end Jesus made unlimited promises about prayer to entice us into God s story p109 We may be ordinary people, but because Jesus promises to answer our prayers, we will do even greater things than these p113 Greg Pruett s easy to read, short chapter book, Extreme Prayer with a forward by Max Lucado, has transformed the way I view praying to God With vivid, alluring descriptions of his work in Africa and his leadership at the helm of the mission organization, Pioneer Bible Translators, Pruett addresses such topics as praying in Jesus name, praying persistently, group prayer and coping with God s silence After having faith in Christ for over 40 years, I feel like I have merely scratched the surface of what prayer is all about and how to approach God with my requests For years, I ve been uncomfortable with the popular interpretation of praying in Jesus name and how we pray for the unbeliever Pruett describes a perspective that makes a lot sense to me I ve been challenged to pray persistently for things that only God can answer and to look beyond praying for health issues to needs of the Kingdom I ve been encouraged to cast a vision and partner with God to see that vision fulfilled in His time and in His way I m looking forward to reading the book a second time, this time, with a prayer journal and discussion questions close at hand, and purchasing copies for friends. From the very beginning of his book Extreme Prayer The Impossible Prayers God Promises to Answer, Greg Pruett, pulls readers in with his honesty and transparency, sharing how his marriage and cross cultural ministry in West Africa would have failed except he says that God honored our decision to pray instead of giving up The Pruetts found themselves struggling to live in a small African village with no modern conveniences, hand washing cloth diapers with no running water or washing machine Trying to live in a difficult land and culture took energy enough, but the Pruetts also faced the pressure of translating the Bible among a people who traditionally followed the Qur an.Pruett says, I believe God took me out on a limb and sawed it off because he wanted me to find out that He is real He wanted me to learn than when it comes to success or failure, prayer is vital Throughout the remainder of Extreme Prayer, he shows readers how to tap into the power of extreme prayer in the midst of desperate and heart hungry moments Pruett doesn t just spout platitudes instead, he shares tried and true lessons he learned himself through twelve years of cross cultural ministry and then as president of Pioneer Bible Translators since 2007.Initially, I was a little concerned reading some of the chapter titles like Blank Checks, Name Power, and Blind Faith So many Bible teachers have misused these principles and turned them into a name it and claim it theology Others have suggested that if one prays and is not healed from an illness, he doesn t have enough faith.Pruett himself said he based the idea of extreme prayer on the study and application of Jesus scriptural promises to do whatever we ask when we pray in His name So, I was pleased to read that Pruett qualified his statement by saying, Praying in Jesus name doesn t mean asking for a Ferrari and tacking on the magic words in Jesus name It means presenting requests that resonate with Jesus character, praying for his name s sake prayers that advance his plans for the earth in other words, proclaiming Kingdom of God oriented prayers At another point, Pruett says that faith in God results in extreme answers to our extreme prayers Again, I was a bit concerned But not for long Pruett said, Just because our prayers are not answered as we expect does not necessarily mean our faith is the problem, and he goes on to address reasons we might not get the answer we expect I guess I shouldn t have questioned a Bible translator s accuracy in interpreting biblical principles.Overall, I found Extreme Prayer to be highly encouraging as well as motivating All the way through, Pruett maintained a kingdom focus, showing readers how to prayer big prayers that line up with God s Word and His desires I can t wait to put these principles into practice my own prayer life and experience God in new and exciting ways.If you re looking to strengthen or freshen up your prayer life, I guarantee you will enjoy this book and grow from it I d even recommend that small groups or ministry teams read, pray and study through Extreme Prayer together At the end of each chapter are some great questions for personal reflection and group discussion.Get a copy of the book from Tyndale House Publishers, from your local bookseller, or from online retailers like , Barnes and Noble, Mardel, Family Christian Stores, Lifeway Christian Stores, or Christian Book Distributors.Visit the publisher s book page to find out , read an excerpt, download a discussion guide, or connect with the author the AuthorGreg Pruett has been president of Pioneer Bible Translators, based in Dallas, since January 2007 Greg, along with hiw wife, Rebecca, and their three children, lived in West Africa for than twelve years, where they completed a translation of the entire Bible into the Yalunka language and shared Christ s love with a people who traditionally follow the Qur an Connect with the author at or through his blog at Prayer is the first actionQuick and powerful read that totally transformed my lazy, vague prayer life into one extremely active prayer life Must read. I will sheepishly add my recommendation alongside Max Lucado, who wrote in the introduction I cannot recommend this book enough Pruett set out to write a testimony of God s faithfulness in answering prayer, extreme prayer as he refers to it I found it inspiring and practical, biblical and relevant, humble and bold Perhaps most importantly, I finished it with my heart full of praise and wonder to God, who welcomes our prayers and longs to answer them, and encouraged and feeling further equipped to pray extremely I highly recommend it Greg Pruett writes well, and I appreciate his frank style of writing about God and Christian service But, the ideas about prayer are mostly works based and center around the effort we put in toward praying and being faithful It s another book on how humans can get what they want if they do the right thing to effectively twist God s arm So, I can t recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about prayer or about relationship with God Greg, if you read this review, write a book about some of your experiences as a missionary Your anecdotes are really interesting and could make an impact on people struggling with their faith or marriage dynamic As a related side note Max Lucado, probably the best known guru for level headed grace focused thoughts on God s love, really should have read this book before writing the forward. I am very grateful for this book As I was reading, I was struck by how often I soften or even ignore the incredible invitation of God to tap into his infinite power Greg Pruett offers a helpful guide to praying the whatever you ask prayers from the Gospels The call to pray specific, unified, persistent prayers in Jesus name was a needed challenge for me I recommend it for both church leaders and other followers of Jesus who desire to see God s mission accomplished This is the review you get when writing while feeding your 2 month old What Do You Do When Your Whole Spiritual Life Falls Apart It Is In These Heart Hungry Moments When We Feel Overwhelmed Or Alone, Struggle With Unanswered Prayers, Aren T Sure What To Do, Or Are Crying Out For God S Help That We Are Surprisingly Poised To Pray The Most Effective Kinds Of Prayers Possible Extreme Prayer Taps Into That Longing For Connection With God When We Need It Most By Teaching Us To Pray The Kinds Of Prayers Jesus Promised To Answer With Unlimited Power It S Not About How To Prayit S About Praying Differently, And Intentionally Tapping Into All Of Jesus S Open Ended Promises In A Way That Achieves Maximum Kingdom Impact In Extreme Prayer, Greg Pruett Searches The Scriptures To Discover The Kinds Of Prayers That God Has Promised To Answer, Challenging You To Access Their Power And See His Immeasurable Glory Unleashed In Your Prayer Life I would have loved to read about the author s different experience of the time they prayed for something humanely impossible and how the enormity of the request nearly made them give up, but that God, in his perfect time, responds in prayer to blow their minds away Kind of like the preaching of Paul Washer on how God provides The principles taught were very insightful and sound I just wanted details and examples of how they ve experienced God s saving grace. This book revolutionized my prayer life Ok, God used it to revolutionize my prayer life Greg does a wonderful job using scripture and life stories to explain the concept of extreme prayer a type of prayer God expects his people to be praying This is not a name it and claim concept Greg is very biblical in his presention I encourage every Christian to read this book.
