Ions and the sections immediately following them I felt that I was reading a comedic attempt by a conservative to write a book about liberals from a liberal perspective All of the arguments were so simple and and ignorant that I thought that it had to all be a farcebut no I did some research and found out that he really was a liberal and that he was being serious That definitely put a damper on what I was beginning to think was a really funny bookThe rest of the book proceeds to xplain how The Right Mr Wrong every great step forward in society has been taken by liberals while the people opposing progress have been conservatives As mentionedarlier there really is no thought given to opposing viewpoints and any credibility of dissent is written off as being regressives His term It s asy to make your argument when you frame the debate as simply as Colmes has when in fact our political system is far nuanced and many great things have come together due to compromise and open minds on all sides of the political spectrumAll in all if it had not been such a uick read I would have missed the time that I spent reading Thank the Liberals Hopefully the next book on politics that I read has a little depth than anything
"Good Is A Liberal Principle "is a liberal principle anything bad is a conservative principleand vice versa That is xactly the kind of thinking we must avoid if we want to make some actual progress Politically I am an independent To me this means that I am not registered with any political party and when it comes to Kiss River elections I look at the issues the platforms and the people involved and then vote for people that share my view of good government I have been of voting age for over 30 years and it has not at all been unusual for me to vote Republican in some races in Democratic in othersvoting a split ticket is the norm for meAnyway when I saw Alan Colmes book Thank the Liberals for saving America I was intrigued so I picked up a copy and gave it a readI have to admit that Colmes makes some fantastic points Forxample if you like weekends 8 hour work days annual vacation time I Martha Adams etc then you need to thank liberalsI was also interested to read what Colmes had to say about the birth of America America was WAY beyond a liberal ideait was a radical idea andven the conservatives among the Founding Fathers were liberals and political The Jigsaw Puzzle Piecing Together A History extremistsSo when did the word liberal become a 4 letter word in some circles I started to ask myself as I read onI have to admit that Colmes comments rung true with me on many topics but not all After all how many books have you read that you agreed with totally I ll bet the list is pretty short And if it s not I recommend reading a lot Anyway I found Colmes comments to be insightful and instructiveeven if we don t seeye to The Odessey eye onverything I appreciate the way he is able to disagree with people of different political persuasions than his without being disagreeable a skill and attribute that too many people think they can live without but desperately needI highly recommend this book to anyone of any political persuasion Of course people who lean left will feel at home with most of the points made than people who lean right will Even so I still recommend it5 stars This is a book for those who are new to the world of liberalism as well as those who just don t know what it is It is a historic view of the movement outside of Dem or

TODAY S DEFINITION THIS BOOK IS LIKELY TO HAVEs definition this book is likely to have whole bunch of information of which you ve been unaware or at least had not completely considered If one is a self defined liberal or progressive it may not have much that is new to youHowever Alan Colmes lays out his case that technically speaking all Americans are liberals because of the country s legal basis in liberty He xamines the Constitution right off the bat and xplains its basis in liberal thinking He then moves on to financial The Impossible Boy employment and social issues including demonstrating howven conservatives become liberal when they are personally affected by those issuesRight up to the minute with issues and political science covered via xceptional research than 12 pages of ndnotes document Colmes findings this is a book that I really think Homespun Remedies Strategies In The Home And Community For Children With Autism Spectrum And Other Disorders everyone could benefit from reading Unfortunately I would also wager that the folks most likely to need the information contained in this volume are the ones least likely to pick it up Thank the Liberals is anxcellent book for liberals who want to pat themselves on the back for being on the right side of issues As a liberal I Asperger Syndrome In The Inclusive Classroom Advice And Strategies For Teachers expected to get fired up by this book but there just wasn t much new here Colmes makes good points as he makes his argument for why most people in one sense or another are liberals and how liberal the ideas were that our founding fathers based our country onbut there s nothingarth shattering hereThe idea that accepting and defending the rights of others to believe differently is a liberal one true but not one that many people would dispute Though this part of a speech given by Mario Cuomo does sum it up beautifully We know that the price of seeking to force our belief on others is that they might someday force theirs on us Now that I read that againit does make me wonder yet again why conservatives are so hell bent on forcing their views on Archer In The Marrow The Applewood Cycles 1967 1987 everyonelse Everyone must believe what they believewhich kind of flies in the face of their screaming about freedom Enough about thatBy the nd I was skimming a bit Reading a book in which you agree with almost all of it yet are not inspired by much of it gets a little tediousI suppose the one thing that stood our for me most was the blurb on the back by Ann Coulter And not by her words but my snort of utter disbelief that she actually read this book Fox News famous token liberal Alan Colmes has written a book for those who have fallen hook line and sinker for the Big C conservative pushed idea that liberal is a dirty word those who shun liberals and those who are afraid to admit they are liberals Colmes does a good job of laying out the liberalism that lies at the heart and root of America but he s not speaking to the choir here No he really means to speak directly to conservatives so they know of their history before they go mouthing off on to speak directly to conservatives so they know of their history before they go mouthing off on internets about dirty liberal anti American scum making themselves look mighty stupid in the processColmes does this with a bit of tongue in cheek of course because Colmes does have a sense of humor He cautions conservatives for xample not to read the points at the Deien Ortadou Da Krtler end ofach chapter because those are just for his liberal readers The book itself is written at about an The Brinestone Guide To Book Review Blogging eighth grade reading level so most people will be able to understand it Closet liberals will feel pride when they see such a fine compendium of liberal accomplishments that by the way some conservatives probably think they came up with Conservatives may be shocked to realize that some of their most lauded heroes were liberal mindedColmes makes it clear how much this nation needs its liberals as it always has But America needs its con. In Thank the Liberals political commentator and Fox News radio host Alan Colmesxplains how people who fight for liberal ideals help our country move forward With his trademark humor and wit Colmes walks readers through the founding of our nation and shows how America was based on a liberal idea Our very founders were progressives and it's progressives who have led America to be the country it is today Through legislation constitutional amendments Supreme Court decisions and the actions of grassroots Americans we see that it is liberal fforts that are responsible for programs intrinsi. ,
Servatives too Most of all if liberals and conservatives are to work together for the good of the country all of us need to be ducated about our nation s history and to be able to talk to ach other about the American values we hold in common Colmes has written a book to launch that discussion I read this book I don t have cable but this guy is on Fox News I don t like to talk about politics A surprisingly good civics lesson Sadly it will not be read by the people that need to read it the most Liberal means free open and generousThe right wing has convinced people that it is or is like a disease Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder by Michael Savage or a T shirt Liberalism Is a Disease
By CafePress Or A Social Stigma HowCafePress or a social stigma How Talk to a Liberal If You Must The World According to Ann Coulter The term liberal has been so nastily trashed that ven liberals don t use it in favor of the term progressive making conservatives regressive as the author points outIn this book Alan Colmes reminds us that American Revolution was fought for liberal ideals and that the resulting US Constitution is a liberal document Regardless of what Americans will tell a pollster Americans are liberal by nature of the country s history and cultureHe notes that when real life intervenes such as when a friend or relative is raped or out of a job or needing surgery without health insurance self identified conservatives become remarkably liberal Medicare and Social Security which are widely supported and are now so institutionalized that they are not recognized as liberal programs when in fact they were conceived by and fought for against conservatives by liberalsNot only are the US Constitution and governmental social programs liberal Christian values are too Charity and love are Christian values as they are of all the world s largest religions Apologies and acts to right wrongs are part of the do unto others creed When the government acknowledges past John Singer Sargent The Early Portraits Complete Paintings Volume I errors and Colmes reminds us how most modern presidents have or when it tries to provide for the needy the conservatives many who identify themselves as well mannered Christians criticize and condemnIn the first half of the book the strongest case is made as to why liberals should be thanked The second half of the book covers liberal issues While it draws connections the firstxamples are most John Singer Sargent Portraits Of The 1890s Complete Paintings Volume Ii established and fundamentalIf you understand history and are up on currentvents there won t be much new to you Conservatives who think the US Constitution is a conservative document or that it created a Christian nation should read this book but I doubt that they will Colmes arranges it as a handy reference guide for use when speaking about these issues with conservativesThis book is short and in the popular format I d be a fan of a detailed work but that is not the nature of this book I gave it 2 stars but in reality it lies somewhere in between It was Ok and Did Not Like It The reason for this is not because of my political persuasion as some may assume because I actually agree with a lot of the things contained within I would probably be classified as a libertarian in most regards ven though Colmes mentions that he thinks libertarians want no government That was my first complaint with the book Colmes makes no pretense about it he does not understand his opponents viewpoints I use opponents but that probably isn t the best word to describe itAt the very beginning of the book he asks some yes or no uestions to determine if you are a liberal Most of these uestions are so obviously biased that it is almost laughable Okay a little moment of honesty from me before reading this book I did not know who Alan Colmes was While going through these uest. "DNA Programs Like Social Security "programs like Social Security assistance for the needy and the government safety nets that have saved us during the recent conomic downturnColmes's goal is to show not only where we are today but also where we as a nation are going and how it is liberals who will get us there The divide between conservative and progressive aims has gotten ver stark and it seems that many conservatives are trying to take us backward revoking or rolling back hard won rights and impeding progress which at best keeps us stranded in the status uo This continual push to the ri.
